Thank you for visiting my online gallery of the 9th Annual Power of the Purse. This was my third consecutive year photographing this event and I am grateful for my continued involvement with the wonderful staff of the CFWNC and for the work done by so many non-profit organizations in this community. This year's event did not disappoint; Anna Deavere Smith's performance was emotional, thought-provoking, and inspiring. All of the images seen here can be ordered in b&w. Also, this year I will donate 10% of reprint sales to Pisgah Legal Services here in Asheville.


This year's keynote speaker was Anna Deavere Smith. This is her profile as written on the Power of the Purse website:
"This Award-winning playwright, actor and professor Anna Deavere Smith will perform at The Community Foundation's 2013 Power of the Purse luncheon on Thursday, May 23. She writes and performs one-woman, multi-character plays exploring issues of community, character and diversity in America. She is the 2013 winner of the prestigious Lillian Gish Prize and was awarded a MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Fellowship for creating "a new form of theatre - a blend of theatrical art, social commentary, journalism and intimate reverie." Interviewing subjects from all walks of life, Smith recreates their words in her performances, transforming herself into an astonishing number of characters. Smith uses her singular brand of theatre to explore issues of community, character and diversity in America and was declared “the most exciting individual in American theatre” by Newsweek magazine."
